STATEMENT FROM PAWB regarding the planned new nuclear power station on Anglesey / Ynys Mon:
The latest announcement by Horizon about cutting construction costs for two possible huge new nuclear reactors at Wylfa does not ease concerns. If anything, the concerns about safety are even greater..What corners would Horizon be ready to cut and compromise safety? As absent as usual from the Horizon announcement is any reference to establishing a radioactive waste dump on the site for the doubly hot and doubly radioactive nuclear waste produced by the two huge new reactors. THIS POISONOUS RADIOACTIVE WASTE WOULD HAVE TO BE STORED ON SITE FOR AT LEAST 160 YEARS. Not a great asset for tourism on Ynys Mon.
2017 has been a very bad year for nuclear power internationally. The financial problems are worsening and investors are not rushing forward. That is the real reason for trying to cut costs in this case. We appeal to Hitachi/Horizon to take the responsible step and pull the plug on the unfortunate plans for Wylfa, and direct their knowledge and experience towards developing renewable technologies which are rapidly coming down in price.
